NATURAL HISTORY SAFARI
Discover the amazing bio-diversity of the Western Ghats in this seven night tour. The area has a great variety of vegetation types including scrub forests, deciduous and tropical rainforests, cloud forests and rolling grasslands. Within this region there are large numbers of species and of these a very high number are endemic (eg 3,049 plants, 18 mammals, 16 birds, 37 butterflies, 174 reptiles, 130 amphibians and 139 freshwater fishes). Accommodation is in simple tents and estate bungalows. As well as jeep safaris a fair amount of walking is included. It is therefore only suitable for reasonably fit people.

DAY 1
The tour starts at Thattekkad. This area is lowland forest with several types of eco-systems making it one of the best birding destinations in South India. Three nights in tented camp.

DAYS 2 – 3
At Thattekkad - birding with naturalist guide. Birds you might see here include the Crimsonbacked Sunbird, White Bellied Blue Flycatcher, Wayanad Laughing Thrush, Malabar Parakeet, a range of owls etc.

DAY 4
Transfer to Munnar. This area is high in the mountains offering tea gardens, craggy peaks and Manavan Shola. Two nights in a tea estate bungalow.

DAY 5
Various activities including birding and wildlife walks, tribal village visit, tea estate and factory visit. The wildlife that may be seen here include some endemic birds such as the While bellied Shortwing and Broad tailed Grass bird and the endangered Nilgiri Tahr.

DAY 6
Transfer to Valparai across the Tamil Nadu border to an area near the Indira Gandhi National Park. Two nights in an estate bungalow.

DAY 7
Birding and wildlife walks with naturalist guide in this forested area, one of the last remaining habitats of the Lion Tailed macaques. Other wildlife that may be seen in this area include elephants, gaur, big cats and birds, especially Hornbills.

  • The prices given are based on a typical high season price. During the peak season the rates will be higher; during the summer they may be lower.
  • The prices above are per person based on two people travelling together and sharing a double/twin room.
  • Please note that our prices do not include the costs of international flights to and from the destination. Airfares are on application.
  • Prices for single occupancy, more than two people travelling together, adaptations to the suggested tours and tailor-made tours on application.
  • Because this is a short tour it can be combined with visits to other parts of South India.

  • If you want to see more wildlife then travel north and visit Mudumalai, Bandipur, Wayanad or Nagarhole.

  • If the tour satisfies your desire to see wildlife then you can add some cultural interest at Madurai or Cochin, some time in the backwaters or relax on a beach.
