The Western Ghat mountains extend 1,600 km from north of
Mumbai almost to the tip of India (Kanyakumari) and separate
the Deccan Plateau from a narrow coastal strip on the
Arabian Sea. They contain the highest mountains in India
after the Himalayas and the average elevation is 1,200m
above sea level. There are a number of large and important
rivers in the area and they are responsible for draining
India of almost 40% of its rain resulting in some
spectacular waterfalls. If you want to enjoy inspiring
mountain scenery there are plenty of places that you can
visit. The best choice of accommodation can be found in the
hill stations and wildlife sanctuaries. The Eastern Ghat
mountains running down the other coast are nowhere near as
dramatic.
Mountain areas that you can visit include:
- PERIYAR
- MUNNAR
- THE FOOTHILLS OF THE WESTERN GHATS
- WAYANAD
- OOTY & COONOOR
