Generally the range of shopping will be better in the larger towns and cities – eg Bangalore, Chennai, Cochin. If you are looking for antiques then the Jew Town area of Cochin and Chettinad in Tamil Nadu are the areas to head for. Kanchipuram near Chennai is the place to go for silks. Handicrafts are available throughout the region and the best prices are likely to be in the government owned shops (where items are priced). Spices are also widely available, although be aware that those on sale in the spice growing areas are not necessarily the cheapest. Body products (eg soap, shampoo, toothpaste) made with natural materials are also widely available.
