If you want to really experience the culture this section
will help you to plan your holiday to South India.
South India is rich in culture and it is quite different to
the culture of North India which is heavily influenced by
the Mughal Empire. The main influences of South India is
Hindu (Tamil Nadu particularly as it has one of the oldest
continuous cultures in the world) and Christian (in Kerala
as this part of India has a Christian history pre-dating
that of the UK). These differences are reflected in the
lives of the people living here – their languages are
different (Dravidian rather than the Indo-Aryan/Sanskrit
languages of the North); they celebrate different festivals
(Diwali and Holi are not really celebrated in South India –
Onam is the main festival); they eat different food (rice is
the staple food in South India whereas bread is eaten much
more in North India).
South India has a number of World Heritage sites and
numerous temples. Ayurveda is extremely popular and the
majority of hotels offer it. If you are interested in world
cultures a holiday in South India is a must.
