HISTORICAL SITES >>

Both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have places of historical interest, some of which are World Heritage Sites, eg Hampi and Pattadakal in Karnataka; Mahabalipuram and the Brihadishwara Temple at Tanjore in Tamil Nadu. The Hindu temples at Belur, Halebid, Somnathpur and Aihole in Karnataka and Kanchipuram, Trichy and Madurai in Tamil Nadu are justly famous, as are the sites of other religions (eg the Jain statue of Lord Gomateshvara at Sravanabelagola and the Muslim monument of Gol Gumbaz at Bijapur). Palaces (eg the Royal Palace at Mysore and the Padmanabhapuram or Wooden Palace south of Trivandrum) can also be visited. Kerala has less to offer in the way of temples and monuments (most of its attractions are scenic) but Cochin has a number of old churches, the Synagogue and the Mattancherry Palace which are well worth a visit.
