THE ELEMENTS OF KERALA – FOUR RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL HOLIDAYS
The ‘elements’ are a major part of Kerala’s beauty and diversity so we have created four tours to celebrate them. The tours are based around one of the elements – Air, Earth, Water and Fire. Each tour is seven nights long and you can join them in any combination to give a longer holiday.

AIR
This tour takes you up into the high altitude of the Western Ghats to experience the cool and clear mountain air. The tour includes the hill station of Munnar, the National Park of Periyar and some time in the foothills with accommodation in a tree house.
Detailed itinerary on request.

DAY 1
Arrive Cochin Airport and transfer to Athirapally in the foothills of the Western Ghats and famous for its spectacular waterfall. Two nights staying in a tree house at Rainforest.

DAY 2
Full day at this stylish resort immediately adjacent to the waterfalls.

DAY 3
Transfer by car to the hill station of Munnar and stay for two nights. Overnight at Casa del Montagna.

DAY 4
Day free to walk in the hills and explore the area. Or you can simply relax at this small hotel set in a spectacular position with views across the mountains.

DAY 5
Transfer by car to Thekkady (Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary) visiting a spice plantation on the way. Two nights in the area staying at Aanavilasam.

DAY 6
In the morning take a soft trek into the forest. Later visit Kadathanadan Kalari Centre to see a display of the oldest martial art. Rest of the day spend at leisure at this delightful boutique guesthouse.

DAY 7
Transfer to a farm in the foothills at Kodikulam. Overnight at Dewalokam.

DAY 8
Transfer to Cochin Airport for your flight home or add another element.

Rates
(for the season starting 1 October 2010)

Suggested adaptations to this tour

Air £968.00
  • The prices given are based on a typical high season price. During the peak season the rates will be higher; during the summer they may be lower.
  • The prices above are per person based on two people travelling together and sharing a double/twin room.
  • Please note that our prices do not include the costs of international flights to and from the destination. Airfares are on application.
  • Prices for single occupancy, more than two people travelling together, adaptations to the suggested tours and tailor-made tours on application.

These four tours are just one week long so we anticipate that most people will combine two or more to create a longer holiday. For example Fire could be split into two with Air, Earth or Water in the middle. This would give a two week holiday starting and finishing with a stay at the beach.

WATER
This is a very important element in Kerala. Kerala experiences two monsoons within the year and the consequence of this is some very large rivers crossing Kerala from the Western Ghats to the Arabian Sea and a huge network of waterways south of Cochin (known as the backwaters). The tour combines the harbour city of Cochin, the backwaters and a waterfall.
Detailed itinerary on request.

DAY 1
Arrive Cochin Airport and transfer to the harbour city of Cochin. Two nights in a hotel overlooking the harbour - Old Lighthouse Bristow.

DAY 2
Enjoy a city tour to discover historic Fort Cochin and in the evening take a sunset cruise round Cochin’s busy harbour.

DAY 3
Transfer to the Kerala backwaters. This unique area of Kerala is low lying and criss-crossed by waterways. Two nights at Nelpura Homestay.

DAY 4
Nelpura stands on the bank of a canal leading to the river Pampa. Set amidst ‘village India’ you have the opportunity to go cycling, walking or make a visit to a nearby school, which can be arranged by your host.

DAY 5
Your exclusive houseboat will collect you from your homestay just before lunch. Spend the rest day relaxing, eating and being looked after by the attentive staff. Overnight on board a Houseboat.

DAY 6
Transfer to Athirapally in the foothills of the Western Ghats and famous for its spectacular waterfall. Overnight at Rainforest.

DAY 7
Full day at this stylish resort immediately adjacent to the waterfalls. Second night at Rainforest.

DAY 8
Transfer to Cochin Airport for your flight home or add another element.

FIRE
This tour concentrates on the heat of the Indian sun. It is a relaxing holiday with time spent at two different beach areas. We suggest a beach in central Kerala and one in the south – but if you are willing to travel further then there are good beaches in North Kerala too.
Detailed itinerary on request.

Arrive Cochin Airport and transfer to the beach resort of Mararikulam. Stay at A Beach Symphony for three nights.

DAYS 2 - 3

DAY 4
Transfer south to the busier resort of Kovalam. Remain in this area for four nights staying Turtle on the Beach.

DAYS 5 - 7
