RICE BARGES / HOUSEBOATS,
BACKWATERS
Kettuvallams or rice barges converted to houseboats are
a unique feature of the Kerala Backwaters. These boats
were originally used for transporting rice and other
goods and are traditionally made of Anjli wood, bamboo
and coir. The boats move slowly along the waterways,
covering approximately 20 km per day. Meals are cooked
and taken on board and traditional Kerala food is
served. There are many operators offering houseboats
these days and the quality varies hugely. The operator
we use has won many awards, has an excellent reputation,
a team of professional boatmen and a sizeable fleet of
quality boats.
Your boat is always exclusive to you (ie the only other
people on board will be the crew) and you can choose a
boat with or without air-conditioning in the bedroom at
night. There are also a few premium boats available with
the option of air-conditioning during the day as well.
The boats can cater for up to two, four, six or eight
guests.
A cruise for one, two or more nights is often the
highlight of a holiday to Kerala. It is very relaxing
and a great way to watch the world go by – but you don’t
have to spend all your time on board. There will be
plenty of opportunities to disembark and visit places of
interest along the way.
We can also offer longer backwater cruises and have a
six night circular itinerary available – ask us for
details. Facilities:
- Your own exclusive boat
- Home cooked food
