Goa is famous for its sandy beaches, vibrant markets and
nightlife and also offers a wide range of hotels. Goa was
colonised by the Portuguese in the early 16th Century and
not ‘liberated’ from Portuguese rule until 1961. The
architecture (especially in the state capital of Panaji)
reflects this. In the 1960s Goa was a major stop on the
‘hippy trail’ and is now popular with the charter operators.
Currently there are few scheduled airlines flying to Goa
which makes it complicated to combine a visit to Goa with
other parts of India. Therefore a scheduled flight to Mumbai
and a domestic flight (or train) to Goa is the usual way of
combining a visit to Goa with other areas.
