This area provides a welcome break in the journey between North Kerala (or Ooty) and Cochin, although there are few hotels in the region.

Guruvayoor is famous for the Sri Krishna Temple (although non-Hindus are not allowed inside) and Punnathur Kota, the place where temple elephants are kept when they are not working. Kerala Kalamandalam (performing arts academy) is located at Cheruthuruthi. Visitors are welcome, for a fee, although photography is not allowed.
