COCHIN is a historic harbour city and Kerala’s
commercial capital. Cochin International Airport
(approximately one hour north of the city) is a modern
airport with international and domestic connections. There
are many places of tourist interest in Cochin, most situated
on Fort Cochin. Mattancherry (Dutch) Palace has wonderful
murals and the Synagogue and streets surrounding it (known
as Jew Town) are definitely worth a visit. St Francis Church
is the oldest European built church in India and was the
original burial place of Vasco da Gama. A harbour cruise is
fun and if you arrive at the Chinese fishing nets as the sun
sets there is the potential of a good photograph. Take your
camera to the Kathakali show as well and get there early to
see the make up being applied. Note: Cochin
has a twin city – Ernakulam. Generally Cochin refers to Fort
Cochin and Ernakulam the mainland part of the city.
Willingdon Island is sandwiched between them. All three
parts of the city are connected by road bridges as well as
water taxis so travel between them is not difficult. |
