THE BACKWATERS refers to the network of waterways
between Cochin and Kollam. A houseboat cruise is often the
highlight of a holiday in Kerala. As you cruise along you
will see people washing themselves, their clothes and their
kitchen utensils; men fishing; children playing; huge flocks
of ducks being herded. Goods are moved along the waterways
and business is conducted on them. The backwaters also offer
opportunities for birding as water birds, particularly
kingfishers, are often seen in the area.
Rice Barges / Houseboats, Backwaters (T – M)
Kettuvallams or rice barges converted to houseboats are a
unique feature of the Kerala Backwaters. These boats were
originally used for transporting rice and other goods and
are traditionally made of Anjli wood, bamboo and coir. The
boats move slowly along the waterways, covering
approximately 20km per day and allowing plenty of
photographic opportunities. Meals are cooked and taken on
board and traditional Kerala food is served. There are many
operators offering houseboats these days and the quality
varies hugely. The operator we use has been awarded the
title ‘Best Houseboat Operator’ for the last three years by
Kerala Tourism. Your boat is always exclusive to you (ie the
only other people on board will be your crew) and we are
able to offer a wide choice of boats - standard, deluxe and
deluxe air-conditioned boats offering accommodation for two,
four or six guests. As the public areas of the boats have
open sides it is only the bedroom that can be
air-conditioned. There is also a deluxe air-conditioned
honeymoon boat offering couples a spacious bedroom with
attached bathroom and private upper viewing deck. On this
boat the air-conditioning unit may be on during the day as
well as at night. A perfect choice if you are on your
honeymoon or celebrating a special anniversary. If you have
more than one night on board there will be plenty of
opportunities to disembark and visit places of interest
along the way. |
